Guildford’s Simon Goddard put down a marker at Rockingham on Saturday which said that he is very much in the frame when it comes to title contenders for 2015.

Simon left a wet and cold Rockingham Motor Speedway with an impressive haul of 202 points courtesy of second place in the first race, victory in the second plus an extra two points for the fastest lap.

The first A group race was won by championship leader Simon Baldwin, with Jake Simpson claiming the final podium spot. Darron Lewis and Matt Tasker had also been in contention before contact between the pair put paid to their hopes. Tasker was later excluded from the race for avoidable contact and was this demoted for round eight along with Kevin Dengate, Richard Collins, Stuart Symonds and DNFs Roger Chesneau and William Stephenson.

Clive Powles had a troubled qualifying session which put him in the B group but he soon made amends winning by four seconds from Simon Woods with Graham Colby very close behind. The podium trio were thus promoted to the A group along with debutant Luc Paillard, Davie Birrell and Gary Hufford.

Goddard’s victory in round eight came after a race long battle with Simon Baldwin who was determined not give up any ground in his title quest. Jake Simpson again maintained his current form to take his second third place finish of the meeting, and with it the Driver of the Day Award.

Matt Tasker was the star turn of the B race. Starting at the back of the grid following his exclusion from round seven, the Derbyshire driver battled his way to the front of the pack by the fourth lap, only to lose it at Pif-paf a lap later dropping down to third. He wasn’t finished yet though and got past Roger Chesneau to challenge leader Kevin Dengate. If he had another half lap he might have done it but Dengate held on to win by just 0.033 seconds, with Chesneau holding onto third.

With all the points in and the dropped scores coming into play, Simon Baldwin has extend his lead at the top of the points table to twelve points from Darron Lewis, with Sam Smith still third.

Next on the schedule is the pivotal triple-header at Cadwell Park on 18-19th July
