After 16 races full of thrills, spills, controversy and drama, it all comes down to this – 3 more races to decide who walks away from 2015 as king of the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship for another year. The last couple of meetings have really shaken up the top 5, even producing a tie for the points lead heading into this weekend at Donington! Those 5 drivers are only separated by 28 points with everything still to play for. Here’s how they stack up…

Darron Lewis and Sam Smith come to the final round on 1244 points each after dropped scores, but it’s Lewis who has the top spot due to scoring two wins this season compared to Smith’s sole P1 at Castle Combe. Both have proved to be very consistent with results and despite having less wins, Smith has Lewis on number of podiums. Sam scored two 2nd places last time at Croft, while Darron suffered misfortune in Race 3 with a left rear puncture forcing retirement. They will undoubtedly be fighting for top step honours throughout the weekend.

One man they will have to look in their mirrors (or potentially somewhere in front of them) for is Brian Chandler. After claiming his second clean sweep of the season at Croft after his first at Cadwell Park, Chandler put his unfortunate weekend at Oulton Park behind him to thrust himself right back into the title hunt. He now holds 3rd, just 8 points back and is a serious threat to the top two given his incredible form of late. His distinctive purple and silver #76 will be one to watch.

Two men also in with a shout and ready to take advantage should any of the first three falter are Ben Tuck and former points leader Simon Baldwin. Two top 5 finishes were Tuck’s reward from Croft, while Baldwin struggled as the weekend went on with a car that was performing at less than 100%. He’s expected to be back at full strength for this weekend, while Ben is never one to be counted out and will certainly put himself in the mix wherever and whenever he can with the frontrunners.

Outside the top 5, there are plenty of drivers who can cause a surprise. Martin Tolley scored 3rd in Race 3 last time and has been a regular feature in the top 10, while Simon Goddard is also seen as one of the busiest men in the paddock as he’ll be doing double duty in the SuperCup – so he’ll be getting a lot of track time for his money! Paul Bishop and Clive Powles are two more men who shouldn’t be counted out either.

For the championship’s last hurrah this year, we’re joined by a few new faces on the grid. Joseph Nehorai, Alexander Westgate, Sam Bailey and Adam Bessell will line up with us for the first time, so a warm welcome to all four and the very best of luck. Hopefully, we’ll see them in 2016 too!

It’s been one heck of a year for the Mazdas and this weekend they will round it out in style. The very best of luck to everyone competing and let battle commence for the championship!

The weather's looking a little bit chilly and overcast, so you'd better wrap up warm just in case! The weather forecast can be found at DONINGTON PARK WEATHER.
