January not only marks the beginning of a new year, but also signs of a new motorsport season on the horizon. To that end, there was no better place to kick off 2016 that with the traditional pilgrimage to the NEC in Birmingham for the Autosport International Racing Car Show.

We certainly had a presence at the show, with reigning champion Brian Chandler on hand to answer any questions that visitors had and to wax lyrical about why the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship is one of the most popular and competitive in club motorsport in the UK. He was also joined by championship co-ordinators Mandy Andrew and Bob Marsh, Go4It Racing's Martin Tolley and Kevin Brent, and the Masters champion from our sister championship the MX-5 Supercup (for Mk3 cars), Ray Worley.

With interest in the Championship even higher for 2016, newly appointed full-time co-ordinator Andrew was optimistic that it could improve on its incredible tally of approx. 93 drivers signed up through 2015 even further. "2016 will be my first season as Championship Co-ordinator, something which I'm greatly looking forward to as the opening round gets closer", said Andrew. "I am both encouraged & excited by the interest shown from new & existing drivers at the Autosport Show. It certain to be exciting finding out who will come out on top as champion this year".

The MX-5 Championship kicks off in earnest this year at the Snetterton 300 circuit on April 2/3 before venturing off for another 6 meetings across the UK, alongside an inaugural European round for the competitors as they have the pleasure of tackling the challenging Zolder circuit in Belgium. With Chandler moving on as a driver to pastures new, the door will be left open for the next champion in waiting to take his crown in 2016.

On a final and light-hearted note, the Autosport weekend saw Bob Marsh celebrate his birthday, which he did so amongst friends from the BRSCC and Mazda paddocks. Many happy returns, Bob!
